Rhomphaiodon ('Hybodus') minor

These spines can measure up to 150mm in height and are rare to find complete. However, fragments may be found on most field trips. This partial spine which is the distal end (top part) is 75mm in height and was found in the Intraformational Conglomerate (which is also known as the Basal Bone Bed) of the Westbury Formation, Penarth Group of Aust Cliff, South Gloucestershire.

Nemacanthus monilifer

These dorsal spines are extremely rare to find complete. However, fragments may be found on most field trips. Spines from adults are known to approach 100mm in height. However, this near complete adult spine is 115mm in height and was found in the Westbury Formation, Penarth Group Late Triassic of Blue Anchor Point, Somerset. It is not known which teeth belong to this species !

Asteracanthus sp.

This is one of several partial dorsal spines I have found to date and  typically needs major repair and restoration. It was found in the Clay Layer just beneath the Transitional Layer of the Ardley Member, Great Oolite Series, Bathonian Stage, Jurassic of Ardley, Oxfordshire. Note the enamelled tubercles and down turned denticles.

Planohybodus peterboroughensis sp. nov.

These dorsal spines are extremely rare to find complete. This distal end piece is 52mm in height. It was found in the Lower Oxford Clay, Callovian Stage, Jurassic  of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire.

Hybodus sp.?

These dorsal spines are extremely rare to find complete. This mid-section piece is 25mm in height and exhibits some fine down turned enamelled deticles. It was found in the Lower Oxford Clay, Callovian Stage, Jurassic  of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. It is not known which teeth belong to this species !

Asteracanthus ornitissimus

These dorsal spines are extremely rare to find complete. This proximal end piece shows excellent stellerate enamelled tubercles. It was found in the Lower Oxford Clay, Callovian Stage, Jurassic  of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire.

Asteracanthus ornitissimus

These cephalic (head) spines are extremely rare to find complete. This specimen is 50mm across but is missing the enamelled spine. It was found in the Lower Oxford Clay, Callovian Stage, Jurassic of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire.
